My Top 5 Tips to Look Great in Photos
We tend to believe that not everyone was made to look good in photographs. Most of the time, we include ourselves in this account. Well, the truth is: this doesn’t need to be true. Especially after these top tips I’ve found to help you when joining in on that group selfie or family frames (If I do say so myself – they work!)
FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
They have the power to show our feelings and personality. So, when taking a picture, try to relax your muscles first by breathing deep before the click. Another good trick is to move your chin slightly forward. Although it sounds unnatural, this simple gesture can make your neck look slimmer, your gaze friendlier and it also adds a sense of elegance to the image.
Smiling is also welcome, but if you don’t want to show your teeth, a subtle smile can give that nice gentle contour to your face.
BODY LANGUAGE
I confess this is the part I get a little clumsy with sometimes as well. But learning the curves of our bodies is also part of self-knowledge. The first tip is to pose in different ways in front of a mirror. As simple as that. Play with your movements, angles and lines – this exercise makes a big difference in taking a good picture.
Combining straight and curved lines – when in front of the camera, instead of just standing straight, try to create a diagonal pose, by leaning your weight on the back of your body. This will give a lighter sense of look to the front, enhancing your shape. Caring about your posture (even when not taking pictures) is also important. To do this, try to draw your shoulder blades closer together and straighten your spine.
All about nuances – leaving arms and legs further apart from the body can also accentuate your figure and highlight what matters. Try these tricks with your hands:
- Leave them resting on your hips;
- Hold them slightly together, while your arms are still away from your waist.
SIMPLE TOUCHES
When making some movement, try to imitate the gesture rather than properly doing it (like placing your hands on your face or hair). This way it will help you add more confidence to the pose but will not hide your other features.
ADJUSTING YOUR HEIGHT
The good thing about photographs is that they allow us to play a little with our height. So, if you would like to look taller, for example, try to take the picture from a lower angle. This will enhance your shape and give that extra inch you are looking for. On the other hand, if you want to look a little shorter, do the opposite – take a picture from a higher angle. In both cases, sitting is also a good pose to do, since our eyes tend to not measure someone’s height when they are in that position.
HAVE FUN
Last but not least: why not try to have some fun? The less you worry about the photograph, the more spontaneous and easy-going it will be. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Next time, just remember a few of these simple tricks.
With love,
Dani
